6.5 Conclusions

The prototype instrument was successfully tested and preliminary data show a very good performance. Substantial conversion yields were observed combined with a overall detection efficiency high enough to measure the 3D distribution of interstellar neutral gas with reasonable statistics with integration times of one to a few days. Sputtered particles could clearly be distinguished from truly converted neutrals. The successful test of the NICE prototype was a major step towards a flight instrument.
