3.1 Motivation

A high secondary electron yield is a requirement for start and stop surfaces on a NPD style detector to achieve reasonable overall detection efficiencies. No high secondary electron yield is needed for conversion surfaces used in a NICE style sensor, but secondary electrons may cause an increase in the background due to electrons accelerated into the ion optics.
