5.2.1 Overview

The ILENA apparatus allowed measurements with high angular resolution but no mass determination. Because the primary beam at the ILENA setup consisted only of molecular oxygen ions the dissociation probability had to be considered further. A typical scenario for neutralization and dissociation of the impinging particles is shown in Figure 3.1. The main unknown factor is the dissociation probability but measurements at JUSO never showed any surviving molecules so the dissociation probability was assumed to be close to 100%.
