4.1 Motivation

An ideal conversion surface either for a NDP or a NICE style sensors would reflect the incoming particle in a geometrical manner like a mirror. As the investigated surfaces are not ideally flat angular scattering occurs. The scattering is caused by effects like the remaining surface roughness, alignment errors between the surface and the desired crystal orientation and adsorbates on the surface. Furthermore, sputtered particles might also contribute to an increase in angular scattering.
